In the year 2003 I decided that I was going to build a F-4 Phantom jet for turbine use. I researched everything I could find on the F-4 and also on kits that were available at the time. There were several kits available, but the price plus freight cost were way out of my budget.
Settling on 1/8th scale for my build, I purchased a 1/32nd scale plastic kit and used it as a base to work from, sectioned it and scaled it up to 1/8th and proceeded to build a plug to mould from.
The fuselage plug was made of ply formers spaced with polystyrene put together on a large dowel, then hot wire cut to shape and sanded. This was then glassed and sanded any imperfections were filled and sanded then the plug was painted to give a good finish to mould.

The tail plane was cut from polystyrene, covered with balsa wood, then glassed as above to be molded.
I decided on a one piece wing as I wanted to build the fuel tanks into the wing. this was built up the same as the tail plane and a mould also made from this.
After the wing mould was made I then cut the wing plug into sections so as to make moulds for  the spars.
Once the molds were completed I finally got to start to build the actual plane
The fuselage was laid up from glass with some carbon. The tail Plane is a Glass, Balsa laminate, with one spar.
The Main wing is made up from a Glass, Balsa laminate with some carbon and three carbon spars. Six fuel tanks were built into the wing using Carbon/Kevlar glass cloth, all seams overlapped for strength. Some fuel fittings fitted before final joint of the wing. All fuel lines, clunks etc were fitted after construction of wing was completed so as servicing can be done when required

The All moving tail plane pivot was constructed and fitted, retracts fitted, ailerons and flaps cut out, hinged and fitted with all internal linkages. I opted for the real F-4 Phantom aileron setup which is ailerons only move downwards and a spoiler in front of the aileron on the top side of wing moves upwards.
